Computer Beeps

Is your computer beeping at you and driving you crazy?

When your computer beeps at you it is telling you that something is wrong.

There are many different reasons that a computer beeps, for example:

  • Over-heating
  • Newly installed hardware (that isn't functioning properly)
  • Misaligned hardware
  • Bad memory (RAM) or hardware

Many times the reason behind the beeping is that your computer is over-heating.
Are there dust mites in and around the computer? A dusty computer may be the cause of your over-heating.

If your computer beeps, and you think that it is over-heating, it is especially important to:

  • Clean around the CPU fan and heatsink
  • Ensure that all fans are running properly
  • Get as much dust out of there as you can!

To keep this problem from happening again, it is best to clean the inside of your computer about once a year or more often as needed!

Are you nervous about opening up your computer and tinkering with it? If you need any help with your computer – feel free to contact us or call us at (800) 573-0234.

Have you installed any new hardware recently?
New hardware may be causing you problems. If this is the case then you should try:

  • Reinstalling your new hardware
  • Uninstalling the hardware (it may be that your new hardware is incompatible)
  • Reinstalling the old hardware that you had before the new hardware was installed.

Hopefully after you restart the computer the beeping will go away, along with your frustration and worry!

Misaligned hardware?
Another problem that can cause a case of computer beeps is if the hardware was not installed properly or has somehow shifted out of place. This could happen if you recently bumped or moved the computer. In this case you will want to:

  • Open up the computer (after it is turned off and unplugged!)
  • Make sure all the parts are securely in place
  • Try reinstalling the hardware

(HINT) This would also be a good time to clean the inside of the computer, killing two birds with one stone!

If you don’t feel comfortable doing this yourself or you need any help with your computer – feel free to contact us or call us at (800) 573-0234.

Although you may not be able to understand what it is trying to tell you, you can figure it out by going through a few simple steps:

  1. Listen to the beeps and see what type of pattern they are forming. Different types of BIOS have different beep codes, and this is what you will be trying to decipher.
  2. Find out what type of BIOS you have (One way to find what type of BIOS you have is to download, install and run Belarc Advisor).
  3. Once you know what kind of BIOS you have you can find which BIOS beep code is being used and then figure out what problem you are experiencing!

(FOR ADVANCED USERS ONLY)
If you have tried the above steps and your computer is still beeping at you, you may want to try a self started power on self-test (POST):

  • Shut your computer off and when you turn it back on, hold down F2 (Depending on the type of computer you have

Doing this will allow you to access BIOS.

Be very careful while you are in this mode to not save anything (Unless you are sure you know what you are doing!).
