Slow Internet

Why is my Internet slow?

One of the most common questions we receive is why an Internet connection seems to have slowed down. Here are a few things you can try to speed up your Internet connection.

Restart your Internet Modem.

Usually, this is the device that has a phone line or cable coming to it.
Follow these steps to restart your modem:

  1. Shut down your computer and wait 30 seconds.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the modem. (If you have a router, you need to unplug it as well at this time)
  3. Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect the power to the cable modem.
  4. Wait another minute to allow the modem to acquire a signal or reconnect.
  5. Reconnect the power to the router. (If you do not have a router, disregard this step and continue to step 6)
  6. Then restart your computer. (The modem connection light should be solid)
  7. Attempt to surf to two web pages to verify good connectivity.

Have You Called Your Local Service Provider?

Sometimes, your Internet service provider may be experiencing slow connections and it may not even be your fault. It might be a good idea to call your local Internet Service Provider:

Support Numbers:

Comcast - 800-COM-CAST
Embark - 888-723-8010
Verizon - 800-922-0204

Do You Have Too Many Browser Add-On's?

Your new computer can come with programs and toolbars installed that you will not necessarily need.
Check for too many toolbars like Yahoo Toolbar & Google Toolbar. Keep in mind, these programs are not bad, they just may be what is slowing down your computer.

  1. Close your Internet browser.
  2. Go to the Windows Control Panel by clicking: “Start”->”Settings”->”Control Panel”, or “Start”->“Control Panel”.
  3. Double Click “Add / Remove Programs”.
  4. This should open a window that displays a list of all of the currently installed software on your computer. Search this list for the name of the toolbar you wish to uninstall, then select it and click the “Change/Remove” button to uninstall the toolbar.
